Ethereum diamond wireframe with a brass gas gauge — the ERC20 token standard

What is ERC20?

ERC20 is the token standard of the Ethereum blockchain — the rulebook a token's smart contract follows so wallets, exchanges and desks can recognise and move it. USDT exists on Ethereum as an ERC20 token, which makes ERC20 the second network, after Tron, that UAE sellers use to deliver USDT to a desk.

How does ERC20 work?

ERC20 works as a fixed set of functions that a smart contract on Ethereum implements, so any wallet, exchange or desk can handle the token the same way. The standard dates from 2015 and defines the basics: transfers, balance checks and spending approvals. Ethereum produces a block roughly every 12 seconds, so an ERC20 transfer normally confirms within about a minute.

Every ERC20 transfer pays for its computation in gas, denominated in ETH. The fee is gas used multiplied by the gas price, and the gas price floats with congestion — a USDT send costs well under a dollar in quiet periods — under a cent at September 2026 gas prices — and ran into the tens of dollars at the May 2021 congestion peak, when the network's average transaction fee passed US$50. That floating fee is the practical difference from Tron's flat resource model, covered in our TRC20 glossary entry.

For the full head-to-head on cost, speed and when each network wins, see our comparison of USDT on TRC20 vs ERC20.

How is ERC20 used in the UAE?

ERC20 is the second USDT rail in the UAE, after Tron. Regional habit quotes TRC20 first because of its flat fees, but ERC20 is the default whenever the tokens already live on Ethereum — an exchange withdrawal, a DeFi position being unwound, or a wallet that only supports Ethereum. Tether's transparency data shows Tron carrying about half of all USDT and Ethereum most of the rest, as of September 2026.

You can spot an ERC20 address by its prefix: Ethereum addresses start with "0x", Tron addresses with "T". The official USDT contract on Ethereum is 0xdAC17F958D2ee523a2206206994597C13D831ec7, verifiable on Etherscan and on Tether's transparency page. A USDT balance showing under any other contract is a different token.

The network is a delivery mechanism, not a pricing input: your trade anchors to the dollar peg whichever rail carries the tokens. Confirmation thresholds and credit times do differ per network — our guide to USDT settlement times by network has the numbers.

When should you choose ERC20 over TRC20?

Choose ERC20 when your USDT already sits on Ethereum or your counterparty requires it; choose TRC20 when you are moving fresh USDT and want the flat, lower fee. The desk rate is identical on both networks — only the transfer leg changes.

Three situations make ERC20 the right rail:

For routine sends and smaller amounts, TRC20's flat fee remains the cheaper habit.

What does ERC20 change when you sell USDT?

ERC20 changes only the transfer leg of a USDT sale: how fast the tokens arrive and what the network charges to move them. The quote, the spread and the bank settlement are identical whether you send ERC20 or TRC20 — when you sell USDT through a licensed desk in Dubai, the desk credits your deposit after its confirmation threshold and releases AED by UAEFTS the same business day.

The chain is rarely the slow part of a sale. Account approval takes one business day, so open the account before you need it — the document list is in our onboarding section.

Worked example: selling 250,000 USDT on ERC20, September 2026 pricing.
Cost lineAmountNote
Desk spread (0.08% band) 200 USDT ≈ AED 735 Fixed in the written quote
ERC20 gas fee ≈US$2–20, paid in ETH Goes to the network, floats with congestion
AED settlement Same business day By UAEFTS, to your own account

Even at the top of the gas range the network fee stays under 0.01% of this ticket — the spread, agreed in writing before you send anything, is the cost that matters.

The full bands — 0.08% to 0.40% by ticket size — are published on our pricing section, with a calculator that converts the band into money at your size.

FAQ

Is ERC20 the same as Ethereum?

No. Ethereum is the blockchain; ERC20 is the standard that tokens follow on it. ETH is Ethereum's native coin and pays the gas; USDT on Ethereum is an ERC20 token issued by Tether.

How much does an ERC20 USDT transfer cost?

The fee is gas paid in ETH, and it floats with congestion — from under US$1 in quiet periods to tens of dollars at peak, as of September 2026. The fee goes to the network, not to any desk or wallet.

How long does an ERC20 transfer take?

Ethereum produces a block roughly every 12 seconds, so an ERC20 transfer normally confirms within about a minute. Full finality — the point where reversal is practically impossible — takes around 13 minutes.

Can I send ERC20 USDT to a TRC20 address?

No — the networks are incompatible and the tokens will not appear where you expected. Recovery is sometimes possible only if the recipient controls the same key on Ethereum. Confirm the network in writing and test a small amount first.

Sell USDT on ERC20 with same-day bank settlement

Meridian OTC is a VARA-licensed Broker-Dealer in Dubai. Send ERC20 or TRC20 — the written quote is all-in, spread 0.08–0.40% by size, and AED reaches your own bank account the same business day by UAEFTS.
