What is settlement finality?
Settlement finality is the point at which a payment cannot be reversed or cancelled. On a blockchain that point comes after enough network confirmations; in banking it comes when the funds are irrevocably credited to your account. The two clocks are different — and both matter when you sell USDT.
KEY FACTS
| Term | Settlement finality — the point of no reversal |
|---|---|
| TRC20 (Tron) | 19–20 confirmations, about 1 minute |
| ERC20 (Ethereum) | 12 confirmations (~3 min); protocol finality ~13 minutes |
| AED payout after finality | Same business day (UAEFTS) |
| USD payout after finality | 2–5 business days (SWIFT) |
| Meridian spread | 0.08%–0.40%, by ticket size |

Network confirmations vs bank crediting
Network confirmations and bank crediting are the two legs of finality in a USDT sale. A transfer is final on-chain once enough blocks confirm it that reversal is no longer practical. A bank payment is final once the funds are irrevocably credited to the beneficiary's account.
On Tron (TRC20), desks typically wait for 19–20 confirmations — about one minute. On Ethereum (ERC20), the market convention is 12 confirmations, roughly three minutes, while the protocol itself marks transactions as final after two epochs — about 13 minutes, as of September 2026. Each new block makes a chain reorganisation exponentially less likely, so on-chain "final" is a risk threshold rather than a switch.
For the fiat leg, finality is the bank's posting. In the UAE, AED moves by UAEFTS, the Central Bank's real-time gross settlement system, and a posted credit is not pulled back at the sender's request: under Article 162 of the Central Bank Law, a transfer through a designated payment system is final, irrevocable and irreversible. The full trade sequence — quote, send, credit, wire — is laid out in our guide to selling USDT in Dubai step by step.
| Rail | What "final" means | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| TRC20 (Tron) | 19–20 confirmations | ~1 minute |
| ERC20 (Ethereum) | 12 confirmations; protocol finality later | ~3 minutes |
| AED via UAEFTS | Irrevocable credit posted to your account | Same business day |
| USD via SWIFT | Credit after the correspondent chain | 2–5 business days |
The network leg takes minutes at most; the bank leg is what actually decides your timeline.
How settlement finality works in the UAE
In the UAE, settlement finality for a USDT sale is reached in two steps under a VARA-licensed desk: the network confirms your transfer, then the desk wires AED to your own-name bank account by UAEFTS the same business day. The trade is complete only when the bank credit posts.
Dubai regulates virtual-asset dealing through VARA, and a licensed Broker-Dealer settles only to an account in your own name. The licence number resolves in VARA's public register in one minute — ours is linked from the licence section of the main page. Own-name settlement keeps the finality chain clean: one sender, one beneficiary, one paper trail.
Because the dirham has been pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725 since 1997, the AED amount is fixed by arithmetic at the quote, not at credit time. Why the USDT to AED rate barely moves is a short story of its own.
Why finality matters when you sell USDT
Finality matters when you sell USDT because it sets the exact moment the desk's obligation starts. A licensed desk does not wire money against a transaction your wallet merely shows as "sent" — it waits for its confirmation threshold, and only then does the same-day AED clock begin.
This protects both sides. Before finality, a chain reorganisation could in principle erase the transfer; after it, the desk carries no reversal risk and can pay out immediately. That is why a slow exchange withdrawal queue or a congested network delays your wire even when the chain itself is fast.
The practical speed-up is not a faster chain but earlier preparation: an approved account and a written quote before you send. Completing the onboarding document list a day early removes the one delay that routinely costs sellers a full banking day.
Worked example: 250,000 USDT to AED
Take a sale of 250,000 USDT on TRC20 at a 0.15% spread. You accept a written quote at 10:05, send at 10:20, the transfer reaches 19 confirmations by about 10:21, and the desk releases an AED wire by UAEFTS the same business day. The chain took one minute of a one-day trade.
The arithmetic: 250,000 × 3.6725 = AED 918,125 gross. The 0.15% spread costs AED 1,377, so the wire credits about AED 916,748 to your own account — check your own ticket size against the published spread bands.
Had the same trade gone to a USD account by SWIFT, on-chain finality would be unchanged — one minute — but the bank leg would stretch to two to five business days. Finality on the network is fast everywhere; the settlement currency chooses the slow leg.
FAQ
Is one confirmation the same as settlement finality?
No. One confirmation means your transaction sits in a block; finality is the point where reversing it stops being practical. Desks set their own thresholds — about 19–20 confirmations on Tron — before treating a transfer as final.
Can a USDT transfer be reversed once it is final?
No. After finality, neither the sender, the network nor the desk can undo the transfer. The only way back is a separate new transaction from the recipient, which is why desks pay out only after their confirmation threshold is met.
When is an AED bank credit final in the UAE?
UAEFTS is the UAE's real-time gross settlement system, run by the Central Bank. A credit is final once posted to your account, so a same-day AED wire from a licensed desk closes the trade for good.
Does a faster network get money to my bank faster?
Barely. Network finality takes seconds to minutes; the rest is desk credit and the bank rail — same-day for AED by UAEFTS, two to five business days for USD by SWIFT. Preparation, not chain speed, decides the total time.
