What are fiat on-ramps and off-ramps?

A fiat on-ramp is a service that turns government-issued money, such as UAE dirhams, into cryptocurrency. A fiat off-ramp does the reverse: it turns cryptocurrency back into fiat and pays it out to a bank account. In the UAE, both are regulated services run by licensed exchanges and OTC desks.

How do on-ramps and off-ramps work in the UAE?

A fiat on-ramp in the UAE takes your dirhams or dollars by bank transfer or card and credits you with cryptocurrency; a fiat off-ramp takes your cryptocurrency and pays dirhams or dollars into your bank account. Both directions are regulated by VARA in Dubai and must run through licensed providers.

Three types of ramp operate in the UAE: regulated exchanges, licensed OTC desks and P2P platforms. The first two sit inside the regulated perimeter; P2P is a marketplace for private counterparties, with the fraud risk that implies. The full selling route, step by step, is in our guide to selling USDT in Dubai.

Ramp types in the UAE — indicative market ranges, as of September 2026, not quotes.
Ramp typeDirectionTypical costSettlement
Licensed OTC desk Both ways 0.08% – 0.50% Same business day (AED, UAEFTS)
Regulated exchange Both ways 0.10% – 1% + withdrawal fees 1–3 business days
P2P platform Both ways 0.5% – 2% Minutes to hours, from a private account

From roughly 100,000 USDT the desk is the cheapest regulated route in both directions; below that size an exchange is usually simpler.

Why does the off-ramp matter when you sell USDT?

The off-ramp matters because selling USDT is only half the job — the other half is getting dirhams into a bank account that will accept them. A licensed off-ramp settles to an account in your own name from a segregated client account, which hands your bank a clean paper trail from a regulated counterparty.

An OTC desk is an off-ramp built for size. Instead of working a sell order on a public order book, you accept one written quote for the whole ticket and the desk wires the proceeds by UAEFTS. Meridian OTC publishes its spread — 0.08% to 0.40% by size — in the pricing section of the main page.

Whichever ramp you use, check the licence first. The one-minute test: ask for the licence number and look it up in VARA's public register — ours is VL/24/03/017, linked from the licence section. A ramp that cannot name its regulator is not a ramp; it is a stranger with a wallet address.

What does an off-ramp cost in practice?

The dirham has been pegged to the US dollar at 3.6725 since 1997, and USDT tracks the dollar, so an off-ramp quote in the UAE is mostly arithmetic: the peg, minus the spread. Our explainer on the USDT to AED rate covers why the 3.67 figure barely moves.

Example: you off-ramp 250,000 USDT at a 0.20% spread. Gross value is 250,000 × 3.6725 = AED 918,125; the spread costs AED 1,836. You receive AED 916,289 in your own account by UAEFTS the same business day you trade.

The same trade through a P2P buyer at a 1.5% discount costs AED 13,772 and arrives as a transfer from an unrelated personal account — the kind of inbound payment UAE banks routinely review. Cheap on the screen is not always cheap at the bank.

How do you choose a ramp in the UAE?

Choosing a fiat ramp in the UAE comes down to four tests: licence, settlement account, quote certainty and size. A provider that fails the licence test fails everything, whatever rate it shows you.

Whichever ramp you choose, complete identity verification before the day you need the money. Our onboarding section lists the documents a licensed desk asks for, and approval takes one business day in most cases.

FAQ

Is an OTC desk an on-ramp or an off-ramp?

Both. A licensed OTC desk converts AED or USD into USDT when you buy and converts USDT back into fiat when you sell. The same account, quote process and bank settlement rail serve both directions.

What is the cheapest way to off-ramp crypto in the UAE?

For tickets from around 100,000 USDT, a licensed OTC desk at a 0.08%–0.40% spread is the cheapest regulated route, as of September 2026. Below that size, a regulated exchange is usually cheaper once withdrawal fees are counted.

Can I use an on-ramp without identity checks in the UAE?

No. Licensed providers in the UAE are required to verify identity on fiat conversions at any size. A ramp advertising "no KYC" operates outside the regulated perimeter, and your bank may treat its transfers accordingly.

How fast is a fiat off-ramp in Dubai?

A licensed desk settles AED by UAEFTS the same business day you trade, once your account is approved. USD goes by SWIFT and takes 2 to 5 business days.

Off-ramp USDT with same-day bank settlement

Meridian OTC is a VARA-licensed Broker-Dealer in Dubai. All-in spread 0.08–0.40% by size, published openly. AED reaches your own account by UAEFTS the same business day once your account is approved.
